In its just-released 2016 report, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) recognizes women losing custody as an international form of discrimination against women, i.e. systemic male entitlement. It is now on the international map as a human rights issue.
This finding is a result of the Petition submitted by The Women’s Coalition to the CSW last year. The Coalition’s claim of discrimination was supported by 150 women from 13 countries who filled out a questionnaire. A separate Petition was submitted for each country as per regulations of the Communications Procedure.
The nearly year-long Communications process involves compiling the Petitions with the forms and submitting them to the individual countries for a response. A special Working Group then studies the Petitions and State responses and prepares a report for the CSW. The CSW considers the Petitions during the annual UN Women conference in New York in March. By the end of May, the CSW issues its annual report which includes their review of the Communications received.
The CSW 2016 report officially recognizes “discrimination against women resulting in the loss of child custody to abusive fathers”. This recognition is a major victory in the battle against the systemic male entitlement causing the devastation of millions of women and children.
Although this official recognition by the CSW is a huge step forward, we must get them to take the next step: include it in their priorities and make a report about it to the Economic and Social Council, the arm of the UN that can take action.
In order to accomplish this it is necessary for many more women to submit forms this year, since there are so many other serious forms of discrimination vying for the CSW’s attention.
There will be forms in Spanish, French and German this year to make it more available so SHARE internationally.
Last year it was 150 women. This year let’s make it 1,050!
